AURIGNY is launching new Compassionate Fares to support people with cheaper flights when they face a family bereavement or emergency.
Our comprehensive Compassionate Fares and Compassionate Flexibility Scheme, starting 1 March, is designed for islanders who need to book unexpected flights, and find themselves facing high costs for urgent last-minutes seats.
It can help keep costs down in the event of a recent bereavement of an immediate family member, or when an immediate family members suffers an unexpected critical medical situation, or has to attend hospital or a hospice as an in-patient.
A Compassionate Fare will cap the cost of a one-way flight to £75 between Guernsey/Alderney and the UK mainland. If you travel between Alderney and the UK, but via Guernsey, the flight is capped at £105 each way.
Compassionate Flexibility is another service designed to support customers who have already made travel plans with Aurigny, but their plans are disrupted due to one of these family emergencies.
If you hold an existing ticket for travel, which has not yet started, there will be a number of options:
- Cancel non-refundable fares and have the value of the fare held on a voucher for up to 12 months.
- Apply the value of your existing ticket towards a compassionate fare (any difference in the fare will have to be paid).
- Apply for a refund in the case of a bereavement to an immediate family member.
If you hold an existing ticket, where your travel has already started, but you need to return home (for one of the above-mentioned reasons) you will be able to change your travel without penalty. This is providing seats are available.
Commercial Director Malcolm Coupar said Aurigny was one of only a small number of airlines to launch such a scheme and the first in the Channel Islands.
He said they had first seen this type of service being provided by the Scottish regional airline Loganair and wanted to offer something similar to islanders.
Mr Coupar said: “We know people can face high fares when booking last-minute flights for family emergencies, and we hope this service will make a real difference at what is such a difficult time.
“This will always be an incredibly stressful period in anyone’s life and we would like to do whatever we can to help support them and make it as easy as possible.
“We are confident this service can provide enormous support, during a time when people really need it most.
“It is part of our ongoing efforts to try to improve how we serve our customers.”
